The beginnings of teacher training in Karlsruhe go back to the year 1757 in which the first prospective teachers were trained and examined. Karlsruhe University of Education was established in its present form in 1962.

The university offers a teacher training programme for primary and lower-secondary school, including the "Europalehramt" (bilingual teaching) programme, which qualifies teachers to teach other specialist subjects in either French or English.

Teacher-training degree programmes at Karlsruhe University of Education are theory-driven whilst at the same time being practically-oriented. The focus is on the promotion of various competences, subject and age-group specific teaching and learning methodology as well as on educational processes in social, cultural and institutional contexts.

In addition to teacher training programmes, Karlsruhe University of Education offers two Bachelor degree courses in "Childhood education" and "Physical Activity, Health and Recreation". Furthermore, Master’s degree programmes like the research-oriented MA in "Intercultural Education, Migration and Plurilingualism" (IMM), the M.A. in "Philosophy and Science of Education", the M.Sc. programmes in "Biodiversity and Environmental Education" , "Sports and Movement in Childhood and Adolescence" as well as the extra-occupational "Educational Gerontology" M.A. can be studied at Karlsruhe University of Education. There is also a focus on adult education and on working with the Gifted and Talented.

Research at Karlsruhe University of Education includes both theoretical and applied approaches, with particular fields of interest in empirical education and school research as well as research in teaching methodology for individual school subjects.

The needs of the students, the internationalisation of all of the degree programmes as well as the advancement of international partnerships are all key features of our profile.

A network of partner universities and (partner) schools offer not only a possibility for studying and carrying out an internship abroad but also for exchanges between lecturers and researchers. The university promotes cultural diversity on its own campus and welcomes not only exchange students and visiting lecturers but also international students who would are seeking to obtain a degree.

Attended by 3.700 students, 85 administrative employees as well as 180 lecturers and researchers employed by Karlsruhe University of Education, it is a small university with a high quality standard. The main location is situated as a campus in the centre of Karlsruhe. The city presents an important scientific location in Germany due to its various universities and important research facilities.
The university has a good connection with not only the city but also with the whole area. Karlsruhe University of Education cooperates with the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), with the University of Music, Karlshochschule International University and various municipal institutions.
