Courses offered to exchange students

Exchange students are allowed to choose their courses from the whole range of courses offered at our university.

On your registration form you generally sign up for three subjects. That means that you can attend all of the courses which are offered for those subjects. If you want to take part in a course from another subject, you are welcome to do so with the exception of the subjects listed below. You will receive ECTS points for all the courses you take and may take the exams.

If you want to take part in the practical modules in Music, Art or Sport, please let us know in advance so we can inform the relevant departments. That also applies if you wish to do teaching practice in a school, as the placements are limited and we need to know as soon as possible.

Here you can find the catalogue of courses currently on offer at the Karlsruhe University of Education, as well as the courses from the preceding semester. Have a look at the Winter or Summer Semester, depending on when you are planning to come.

The course catalogue for each semester is usually published 2 month before the official start of lectures (in February/in August). In order to prepare your Learning Agreement already before that date, please refer to the course catalogue of previous semesters. Courses offered each winter semester tend to be very similar, as do courses offered each summer semester.

Before the semester begins, you should check the catalogue revisions to ensure that all the courses you have chosen are taking place as planned and to see if there are any new ones that might interest you.

Language of Instruction and Language Proficency

Working language for most courses is German, with the exception of courses taught at the English or at the French Department which are taught in English and French.

Moreover, each Spring Semester (March-July) we offer a programme of courses taught through the medium of English which in combination with an intensive German language course for beginners opens up study abroad opportunities for students coming to Karlsruhe without any prior knowledge of German.

Requried Language Proficency:

  • For Autumn Semester: GER min. B1 (intermediate level)
  • For Spring Semester: also possible for beginners, if you take courses taught in English, but minimum level of English of B2 required; GER min. B1 if you plan to attend courses taught in German

Course Registration

Final Course registration will be done after your arrival in Karlsruhe. We will offer an information session about choosing courses and about the registration process.

Credit and Workload

1 ECTS credit is equivalent to 30 working hours. The standard course load per semester is 30 ECTS credits and 60 ECTS credits for one full academic year.
